Self Advocacy and Self Determination

Self advocacy is communicating your needs and wants to achieve your goals. Self determination is: “The attitudes which lead people to define goals for themselves and the ability to take the initiative to achieve those goals.” (Ward, 1988). Here are some websites that provide information about self advocacy and self determination:

I’m Determined is a website that has a range of information and tools for teachers, parents, and youth to use for self advocacy.

Pennsylvania Youth Leadership Network (PYLN) is a group of young adults with disabilities who want to make a difference in the lives of youth in Pennsylvania. The website includes secondary transition and healthcare toolkits, webinars, and a list events.

You can also download the Disability Disclosure Workbook, which can help students make informed decisions about disclosing their disabilities, decisions that will affect education, employment, and social lives.
